The Tack Shop includes a renovation and addition to a 1940s grocery store. The 4000 square foot building was doubled in size by adding a second storey. Since occupying most of its corner site, there was little ability to include windows on the north and west sides of the building. To compensate for this, a split roof design with clerestory windows and walk out decks provide a tremendous amount of daylight throughout the three professional offices on the second level.
The main floor, of concrete block and brick construction, has had multiple openings cut into the south façade, thus rejuvenating this corner building with multiple business entrances. A minimal number of systems have been added to the building. We have super-insulated the structure to reduce any air-conditioning requirements. Passive ventilation has been planned for throughout the building. The original hardwood floors for the grocery store have been exposed, giving a great quality finish - not to mention history - for the new tenant. Salvaged doors from a recently demolished YWCA have been used for all of the interior doorways, with warm oak veneer and brass hardware. Salvaged cast iron radiators have been incorporated within the hot water heating system.
