Our clients were seeking an open and contemporary space that respected the traditional layout and styling of their 150 year old house. The resulting design repositioned key living spaces on the main level, minimizing the structural changes and keeping all work within the existing walls of the home. The eight-foot wide central parlour was converted into a galley kitchen. Existing doorways were widened to open the kitchen up to adjacent spaces. A high servery bar delineates the kitchen from the dining room while a four-foot wide eat-in peninsula links to the living room and rear entry. A large coat closet and dramatic backlit maple slat wall / boot bench bookend an expanded passage to the backyard. On the upper level, a four piece bathroom and master bedroom were relocated while a third bedroom and an outdoor sunset roof deck were added. Traditional mouldings and trim were carefully maintained during construction, juxtaposing the renovation's contemporary interior finishes, finite details and sleek wooden palette.
