Nestled amongst the trees while maintaining good passive solar exposure, the positioning of the Bullard House takes full advantage of the best qualities of the sun and earth-from which Solterre gets its name.
Conceived as a retirement home and a gathering place for family, the project evolved as two separate wings connected by a transparent, light-filled entrance. To save energy, the extended family wing can be closed off when not in use to save energy. The Bullard House was recently awarded the first Platinum LEED for Homes project in Atlantic Canada - receiving the highest rating available.
Through careful planning, this 5-bedroom house provides views of the ocean from all the main rooms. The open concept living, cooking and dining space exudes warmth and brightness through the use of a salvaged red oak timber frame, which, by the placement of the columns, provides an informal separation of activities. The comfortable interiors directly access an ocean-side deck providing outdoor living and dining areas for those special, and sometimes rare, Nova Scotian fair-weather days.
